2020 Summer Internship Opportunities – Application review begins January 15, 2020. Last date to apply is March 1. Early applications encouraged.

Chester Theatre Company is a professional theatre company located in the foothills of the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts. CTC produces 4-5 plays each summer, staged and performed by professional actors, directors and designers.  Now in its 30th season, CTC has earned a reputation for producing the best in contemporary theatre, consistently winning top honors with area critics. CTC productions have gone on to Off Broadway engagements and regional, national, and international tours.

 

Stage Management Interns

Stage Management interns will each assist on / serve as assistants to the stage managers on each of the 4 main stage productions.  The SM interns will:

  • Assist the AEA stage manager with rehearsal room tasks such as:
    • Preparing the rehearsal room
    • Tracking blocking
    • Being on book and taking line notes
    • Preparing production paperwork
  • Track and maintain props and costumes during rehearsals and performance
  • Lead backstage crew during performance
  • Assist with load in and strike of all productions during their contract term
  • Interns will assist with other front of house and administrative tasks.

This internship provides the unique opportunity for someone interested in stage management to work closely with an AEA Stage Manager and receive direct mentorship and guidance.  Each SM intern will work closely with the actors – taking an independent leadership role on two productions in the season.

Dates:

Position 1 (Shows 1 and 3) (approx.) 3rd week of May to 1st week of August

Position 2 (Shows 2 and 4) (approx.) 1st week of June to 3rd week of August

Production Interns

Production Interns are hired in three areas, though individuals can expect to perform tasks and work across different disciplines:

  • Electrics
    • Assist the Master Electrician on hang and focus of lighting
    • Assist with set up and maintenance of the sound system
    • Run lights and/or sound for each production
    • Assist with load in, change over, and strike as needed across areas
  • Carpentry and Props
    • Assist the Master Carpenter with scenic installations and change overs (sets are constructed by an off site scene shop)
    • Assist the Master Carpenter with props creation, maintenance, and acquisition
    • Act as run crew backstage or board operator for each production
  • Props and Wardrobe
    • Assist the Master Carpenter with props creation, maintenance, and borrowing
    • Assist costume designers in the fitting process and work with assistant stage managers on maintaining rehearsal pieces
    • Perform daily wardrobe maintenance tasks during the performance periods
    • Assist with load in, change over, and strike as needed across areas
  • All production interns will work on load in, change overs, and strikes for all shows
  • Interns may be asked to assist with other production or administrative tasks as needed.

Dates: Props/Wardrobe Position: (approx.) 3rd week of May to 3rd week of August

Carpentry and Electrics Positions: 1st week of June to 3rd week of August

Artistic / Administrative Interns

The two Artistic /  Administrative interns will work closely with various departments in artistic administration for the Summer 2020 season.

  • Dramaturgy
    • Work with the company dramaturg on research materials for productions as well as program insert materials and lobby displays
  • Direction
    • Opportunity to serve as assistant to the director on one of the 4 main season productions
    • Assist the Artistic Director on a variety of tasks including coordinating artists for panel discussions, organizing special events, and script organization
  • Company Management
    • Assist the Operations Manager in coordinating artist travel and housing
    • Assist with union contract organization
    • Check in with artists to ensure housing needs are met
    • Support stage management with rehearsal hospitality
  • Box Office / House Management
    • Daily phone sales / order processing
    • Working with Box Office Manager and volunteer ushers to run front of house and assist with house management.
  • Marketing and Development
    • Assist with special event planning, invitation, and set up
    • Data entry and database management
    • Website and email marketing

The successful candidate should have both experience working in an office environment and an interest in pursuing a career in the theatre/arts administration.  Interns work closely with multiple departments, so we are seeking candidates who are professional, self motivated, and detail oriented.
